Twenty-one young participants from Cohort 4 of the Community Reentry Reinvestment Grant (CRRG) Program marked a major milestone in their reentry journey this June. The CRRG initiative, a partnership between the Christopher A. Pugh II Center (CPC), Shelby County Juvenile Court, and the Greater Memphis Chamber, concluded its 8-week program with a strong showing of growth, achievement, and promise.
After completing the compulsory Needs Assessment course, participants advanced into vocational training tracks focused on practical skills and industry-recognized certifications. Eleven youth enrolled in the Culinary Arts training program, where they were taught by seasoned professional chefs. They gained hands-on experience in kitchen safety, food preparation, and hospitality operations, ultimately earning the ServSafe Food Handler Certification, an achievement that opens doors to immediate employment opportunities in the culinary field.
Meanwhile, seven participants completed the Film and Production Pre-Apprenticeship, gaining valuable exposure to digital storytelling, camera operations, and editing techniques. Their training also included behind-the-scenes industry tours, technical instruction, and mentorship from media professionals, laying the foundation for careers in creative industries.
In addition to workforce development, the program prioritized wellness and emotional health. As part of their holistic support, the young men attended Heart & Soul: A Men’s Wellness Collective, hosted by Baptist Memorial Health Care. This free, one-day conference was designed to empower men to take charge of their mental and emotional well-being, an especially vital conversation for justice-impacted youth.
Participants engaged in breakout sessions on anger management, mentorship, suicide prevention, legal rights, family planning, and workforce development. They also received access to free health screenings and professional consultations, gaining firsthand exposure to tools and support systems that can shape healthier futures.
For many, the experience was eye-opening. More than just vocational training, CRRG Cohort 4 delivered a life-changing opportunity, equipping participants with the skills, self-awareness, and confidence to take meaningful steps toward their goals.
